5 Things You’re Saving Money On Just By Working From Home.

  1. All transport and travel – Both public transport as well as international or nationwide and regional travelling is a consideration when it comes to what you are saving by working remotely. If you are working at home, your average daily commute is from your bed to your living room. The average spending budget for your daily commute is now going to be staying in your pocket. Not to mention the fact that you probably bought a take away coffee on your journey in the mornings when you were heading to work, which can now also be saved by replacing it by making your morning coffee at home.
  2. Food – It’s easy to take 50 trips to the fridge every day just out of sheer boredom and restlessness, but when you are working in an office environment, you can just as easily be splashing out on so much food on a daily basis. Starting with your morning coffee, then onto lunch with your colleagues, PLUS picking something else up from the shops on the way home from work. It all adds up, imagine you’ve been doing this at least one day a week. If you do the maths and be honest with your spendings, you’ll see how much you can save by working remotely.
  3. The guilt is kicking in swiftly too. Online shopping for clothes used to be minimal but more importantly, it’s the fact that it was done so leisurely! Just casual browsing or seeing it on social media…plus it was nice having something to look forward to when you came home. Now that you are there virtually round the clock 24/7, especially when the postman is coming by to drop off your online purchases, well the frequency of this becomes a guilt trip and having to acknowledge the frequency of it isn’t as fun as it used to be…
  4. Splashing out on socialising…By working from home, socializing was just a short distance from your workplace and whichever is most convenient is your chosen venue for a catch up. Working from home means no trip to the pub on the way back from work. Birthday parties and nights out of celebration included. All of that is staying safely in your bank account for the time being and socializing can be one of your largest expenses after rent in your budget. Now is a good time to see what other options you can put in place, such as video conferencing and connecting with friends and family on other channels.
  5. Mobile Data – Yes really. You’re going to be at a desk on your desktop or laptop for the majority of the time, so you’ll be spending significantly less time on your phone. In other words, more on your broadband and less on your mobile data. For once you might not be over your limitations within your phone contract.

Working remotely and from your own place has plenty of long term benefits. Aside from saving time by not having a daily work commute, that’s potentially an hour added on to each end of the work day, plus – from a long term perspective for your finances, when you monitor it all, you can really see the difference that it will have on your budget.

  1. Indeed – during winter I’d spend almost £70 a month on transport to and from work (too dark in the morning and at night to walk safely home). Even though I would have theoretically walked now as it’s summer, it’s still a saving.

Plus, not having to wear work clothes! Don’t get me wrong, I don’t work from home in my pyjamas, but it does mean I can wear jeans etc I wouldn’t normally wear. Plus, it also means I can wear my huge Pusheen slippers XD
