The term millennial is for people aged “Overall, the earliest proposed birth date for Millennials is 1976 and the latest 2004.” -Source http://whatis.techtarget.com/definition/millennials-millennial-generation
For each decade, we always used a common term. Now we refer back in time, and call them by their decades (50’s – fifties, up until 90’s) The term “noughties” came up and running, when we ran out of ways to call this- 00’s) What else are we going to call those ten years? At least in the UK it worked, where we say “nought” as a zero. The rest of the world had to struggle on its own.
So, with all this Generation X, Y and Z – what is it about the term “millennials” that all the media, online journalism, and buzzfeed love so much.
Google Millennial and click under images. All you get are these stock type images of colorful student trendy types in rainbow colored sweaters. Millennials suggest an age bracket, but , truth be told – it represents so much more than that. A personality.
Tolerance, aceptance, open minded, feminism, being nerdy is popular. Being the cheerleader has gone down the hierarchy of cool kids at school.
The older set of millennials, are compared to hipsters. A hipster lifestyle VS a millennial. Aren’t they just the same thing? When the word hipster comes up, we think of kale burgers, over rated vegan food, alternative transport such as penny farthings, and lumber jack guys with VEVO headphones (to name a few).
When the word millennial comes up, supposedly the age bracket is prioritized than the culture of hipster lifestyle.
It’s made it easier for us all. To put us in a box.
It’s hard to imagine, the people in their 20-30’s that were in the 50’s being called something. Not that was a popular word like millennial and hipsters. We are called those things, because it makes it easier for the media. But we like it.
When we meet people out of this age bracket, older ones, or kids – it’s nice to be identified as a millennial. Easy assumptions. They can guess what you like and usually are spot-on.
Onward and Upwards.
What are they going to call this age bracket in 20 years time? Are hipsters still gonna be called that? Or is there going to be some totally different undiscovered lifestyle that will turn up? The countdown has started already. See you in 2037!
