If you have ever watched 21 jump street, you must have picked up on the line that Jonah Hill says when he talks about the new type of high school kids. He tells his “brother”, that, after being in the new high school for just one day, its cool and acceptable to be tolerable as opposed to how high school kids were in the past, more prejudice against minorities.
Millennials are more welcoming than any generation up until now. Growing up in a society where gay marriage has been legalized in America, PLUS where marijuana is potentially going to be legalized across the nation – all of this is really adding up now and the outcome of it, especially in years to come, is going to create an individual who can accept what they see without having to judge someone first.
Let’s take a step back though and look at this in a decade scale.
2006: There was a lot going on, but undoubtedly , rainbow marriage was not a priority in what voters were looking for. It wasn’t as acceptable to be tolerable either. If you jumped on their side of the bandwagon, rather than being seen as non judgmental and accepting, you would have probably been suspected of joining their side and called names.
Now it’s 2016. In less than 2 months it will be the elections. Neither of which have highlighted anything remotely related to being more tolerable as a prime aspect of being a millennial, and yet, millennials, are categorized as the biggest demographic in the voting audience!
Conclusion: The positive side – It would be great for this tolerance to continue and flourish. The negative side – It’s hard to really see it head that way in the future, considering the circumstances and politics going on right now. The future is our own to create, and regardless of who is in the White House, it is still a possibility that the tolerance can grow.
