Don’t Forget Your Toothbrush – And Other Essentials for Your First Day

You’ve gotten passed the hard part. You’ve landed the job and managed to secure a position at a company you can have a future with. Congratulations , the worst is over.

Getting started in a new place is a difficult barrier to get past. Just like your first day at school, first dates, or the first time you moved into your own apartment. It’s fear of the unknown that is in your head.

FOCUS! This is your chance to make your mother proud, and a career that you are going to be gloating about in front of your friends in years to come. When we look back at our first days for those aforementioned milestones, we wonder what made us do and say the stupidest things in the heat of the moment.

Let’s not let that happen ever again. Here are a few things you can have prepared in your mind to settle those butterflies.

  1. Do your homework. A little stalking never hurts. On average 1 in 10 people google and Facebook search a first impressions scenario. You have the entire internet at your disposal. Put it to good use for once and find out who you are going to be working with. (If you haven’t already)
  2. Dress to impress. Think about this, would you rather be overdressed or under-dressed? Flashback to a time where you were both and then plant yourself in each of those outfits , in your new job on the first day. Whichever one makes you less anxious, choose that one.
  3. Think back to what you said in the interview and try to figure out what you did that made you stand out ( in a good way) or maybe you said something in a different way this time. Try and use those words and put them into place when you are in your new office.
  4. Choose wisely. As well as familiarizing yourself with your new surroundings, you’ll also meet a lot of new people. The stalking will help you put a face to a name but, in the work place it really is vital to know who is who on the food chain.  Pay attention when you’re being introduced and stand up straight!
  5. Overwhelmed and Underwhelmed  – It’s a lot to take in. After all the hard work has finally paid off, you are in a secure position and your future is lying ahead. Don’t put so much pressure on yourself. The whole “This is the first day of the rest of your life” quotes can be torturous when said in your head and a lot worse when said aloud. Read the first line again aloud and remind yourself that Day 1 can be the best milestone you have made so far!
